The myth of the black Oppenheimers
Great article from Jeremy Cronin in the Mail & Guardian (subscription required). He argues that the only reason why white big business is pushing for the establishment of a black elite (such as through BEE deals) is so that they can sell the capitalist ideals to the government. They can sell the idea that "cold, marketplace logic" should supersede political social agendas. A de-racialised boardroom means that one can forget the means through which South Africa gained its wealth. I believe that to be true, but would also argue that the government has wholeheartedly adopted capitalist ideals already; very little persuasion is required. Not so, eh Cyril?

Depends on how you define capitalism, I guess.
When people are relying on their political and government connections to amass personal wealth, and when corporates were happy to profit from state-sponsored oppression and limitation of individual freedoms, I don't regard that as capitalism in any original sense of the word. What you and Cronin define as "capitalism" many would define as "socialism".
If you simply used the word "greed" I'd be far more inclined to agree with you; and that human trait seems to manifest itself under any and all social and political systems, not so?

I'm flattered that you associate me with Jeremy Cronin, but I wouldn't like to comment on his behalf. I define capitalism as a mode of production based on the exploitation of labour to create surplus value (ala Marx). This gives money (or capital) the ability to create more money, with the only regulating force, in an ideal situation, being pure competition. However, capital has a number of internal contradictions (which I won't go into here, but Marx can tell you all about). I define capitalist ideals as the desire to create the perfect conditions for capitalism to flourish without any negative expternalities that would reduce surplus value or inhibit competition. The South African government's attitude towards big business on many (although not all) issues reflects the desire to create these conditions in order to grow the economy. In which case, I call this "adopting capitalist ideals".
