My only post on the elections

I heard an interesting comment from a disillusioned Democrat yesterday. She reckoned that 11 of the states added the question of same-sex marriages to the ballot in order to lure the far-right Christians to the polls - "a bit of red meat for the seething Evangelical masses to feed off" is how I think she put it. An interesting tactic, if it's true, and not one that I've heard any comment on.

  • A nice tactic, especially as it's gone unnoticed. It'd be interesting to find an analysis of such vote pullers in the different states, the degree to which they affected the vote, and their influence in swing states.

  • Is there any documented instance of the phenomenon? It is an interesting tactic, indeed. My very last post on the US elections will probably be this weekend. George used people's religious beliefs, that's for sure. Perhaps he may. I'd like to explore it, after which I'll gladly leave the subject alone for the next four years.

  • Yes, apparently it is a well know fact in the US. I was speaking to a friend about it and he said the Republicans do it all the time, and admit to doing it. However, they speak about it in very clinical terms i.e. 'It is an issue that mobilises our support base' rather than 'We like to stir up a bit of moralistic fundamentalist fury to help our man win'.

  • And many so-called American liberals are realising the error of their ways, i.e. don't hand it to them on a plate. The average Democrat needs to learn politics is a tough, rough game with few rules. Democrats are habitual losers chiefly because the Republicans know this...they're comfortable with it and don't let it interfere with their lives. In other words, electoral politics is basically immoral. The end justifies the means. They know this, hence their facility for doublespeak. Projection ensures Democrats view Republicans as dullards incapable of seeing the big picture. It's the other way round and Democrats will end up wringing their hands and twisting their psyches until they 'get it' or 'get with it'.

  • Via Andrew Sullivan:

Bush improved his share of the popular vote by 3.2% from 2000 to 2004 (47.9 in 2000, 51.1 in 2004). Now how did he do in the states which had anti-marriage ballot initiatives?

    Arkansas +3.0%
    Georgia +3.3%
    Kentucky +3.1%
    Michigan +1.8%
    Mississippi +2.2%
    Montana +0.7%
    North Dakota +2.2%
    Ohio +1.0%
    Oklahoma +5.3%
    Oregon +0.8%
    Utah +4.2%
Accordingly the conclusion can be made that the anti-gay marriage ballot hurt Bush more than it helped him as only three of the eleven states had above average increases.
